Assistant Manager - Packaging & Procurement
Bhiwandi, Maharashtra
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
A. Packaging Development & Innovation
Own end-to-end packaging development projects — concept, design brief, prototyping, vendor sampling, and launch — within agreed timelines.
Manage stage-gate milestones and ensure projects meet brief specifications before sign-off.
Coordinate cross-functionally with Marketing, Design, Production, and QA to keep concept-to- prototype lead time within target.
Drive material and substrate innovation, including qualification of new materials and adoption of sustainable / eco-friendly alternatives.
Maintain documentation and
compliance for packaging specifications, approvals, and BOM
updates.
Proactively flag deadline or quality risks to stakeholders before they breach agreed timelines.
B. Packaging Material (PM) Procurement & Cost Management
Lead end-to-end sourcing and procurement of all packaging materials — rates, commercial terms, and payment cycles.
Identify, qualify, and onboard new PM vendors; build alternate/backup sources for critical SKUs.
Negotiate aggressively to drive year-on-year PM cost reduction; document and report savings monthly with old rate, new rate, and quantity.
Issue and track PM purchase orders; monitor supplier On-Time Delivery and resolve escalations.
Monitor PM incoming rejection rates at QC; drive supplier corrective action when quality issues recur.
Send a weekly procurement status update to the Operations Head covering open POs, ETAs, and any risk or delay — proactively, before it becomes a problem.
Minimise emergency/spot purchases by improving procurement planning and lead-time
forecasting.
SKILLS WE'RE LOOKING FOR
▪ Exceptional negotiation skills — demonstrated history of driving measurable cost savings with
vendors.
▪ Strong working knowledge of packaging substrates: flexible films, corrugated board, rigid plastics,
glass, labels, cartons, closures, and laminates.
▪ Familiarity with print technologies (flexo/gravure/offset), GSM/micron specifications, and barrier
properties.
▪ Vendor development and relationship management — able to build and manage a multi-vendor
base, including backup sourcing for critical items.
▪ Project management discipline — comfortable owning stage-gate timelines and managing multiple
concurrent development projects.
▪ Working knowledge of BOM structures and how packaging specs flow into production planning.
▪ Sustainability / eco-packaging awareness and ability to evaluate alternate materials.
▪ Advanced Excel — cost tracking, vendor scorecards, savings trackers; comfortable working in
shared SharePoint-based reporting formats.
▪ Strong written and verbal communication — able to manage stakeholders across Marketing,
Production, QA, and external suppliers.
▪ Analytical, data-driven decision-making, particularly around cost-benefit trade-offs in material
selection.
▪ High ownership and ability to operate independently as an individual contributor with direct visibility
to the Operations Head.
Qualification & Experience
- Required
▪ 5–7 years of experience in packaging — in development/innovation, material procurement, or both
— ideally in FMCG, F&B, or consumer goods.
▪ Working knowledge of packaging substrates and strong negotiation skills.
Good to Have
▪ Experience spanning both packaging development AND material procurement — candidates
strong in one area with clear aptitude for the other are equally encouraged to apply.
▪ Diploma / PG Diploma in Packaging from the Indian Institute of Packaging (IIP) or an equivalent
institute. (Preferred, not mandatory — B.Tech/B.E. in Packaging, Polymer Science, Mechanical, or
Print Technology, or equivalent industry experience, is equally welcome.)
▪ A track record of vendor negotiation and documented cost savings.
